Under the warm Lowveld sun at Matumi Golf Estate, political leaders, government officials and stakeholders gathered not only for a round of golf, but for a cause aimed at changing lives. Hosted by Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu, the annual Premier’s Charity Golf Day brought together key figures — including Matlanatso Lydia Moroane, Jesta Sidell and Head of Department Immy Serakalala — to raise funds for disadvantaged communities while reinforcing the role of sport in building partnerships for social development.
Following the recent State of the Province Address, Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu hosted his annual charity golf day at the scenic Matumi Golf Estate in Mbombela.
The event brought together Members of the Executive Council (MECs), municipal leaders and key stakeholders from across the province. Among those present was the Mayor of Bushbuckridge, Matlanatso Lydia Moroane.
Also in attendance were key officials from the provincial government, including Jesta Sidell and Head of Department Immy Serakalala, reflecting the importance of collaboration between government departments and stakeholders in supporting initiatives that uplift communities.
While the day unfolded on the fairways and greens of the golf estate, the purpose of the gathering extended far beyond the game itself. The Premier’s Charity Golf Day aims to raise funds to support disadvantaged members of communities across the province, particularly initiatives that assist learners who struggle to access educational opportunities.
Participants used the occasion not only to enjoy the sport but also to strengthen partnerships between government, the private sector and civil society — partnerships that remain crucial as the province continues to address pressing service delivery challenges.
In his remarks during the event, Premier Ndlovu acknowledged that the province is still dealing with the aftermath of severe floods that damaged several road networks and infrastructure across parts of Mpumalanga months ago. Rehabilitation of roads and restoring access for communities remain key priorities for the provincial government.
Beyond infrastructure concerns, youth unemployment also remains one of the most pressing challenges facing the province. The Premier highlighted ongoing government efforts to equip young people with skills and opportunities, particularly within the agricultural sector — an industry seen as a potential driver of economic growth and job creation in rural areas.
Programmes aimed at training and supporting emerging young farmers are part of the broader strategy to encourage youth participation in agriculture while also strengthening food production and rural economies.
Speaking in a video shared during the event, the Premier also reflected on his personal relationship with the sport.
“Golf needs a lot of attention and practice, and right now I simply don’t have the time,” he said. “My focus at the moment is on delivering services to the people of Mpumalanga. Maybe when I retire, I will have more time to decide which sport to play seriously.”
His remarks drew light laughter from attendees while also underscoring the demanding nature of public leadership.
Despite his limited time for the sport, the Premier’s presence on the course symbolised the broader spirit of the event — bringing people together for a cause that reaches beyond recreation.
As the day concluded at Matumi Golf Estate, the real impact of the event lay not in the scorecards, but in the contributions made toward supporting education and uplifting disadvantaged communities across Mpumalanga.
